Seminar Investing in the (EV) Energy Transition

  • Date: 12/11/2024
  • Time: 3 - 5 PM (CET)
  • Location: TBA

NB. This event is supported by BlackRock; the language of the event is English.

The energy transition is one of our time’s most pressing societal issues. The transition to a sustainable energy supply and EV industry is crucial to limit global warming and to ensure a future-proof economy.

For investors, this transition offers enormous opportunities and challenges. The shift to renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydrogen creates new markets and technologies, which provide attractive investment opportunities. At the same time, the complexity of regulations, technology, and financing poses challenges.

Although we will take a broad approach to the topic, we will focus on the EV industry and its supply chain.

This seminar will provide you with the necessary insights into how you can contribute to a more sustainable future and gain a clear picture of the growing investment opportunities within the energy transition.

Programme:

  • 3:00 pm | Word of Welcome | Angélique Laskewitz, VBDO
  • 3:10 pm | Navigating the Energy Transition Investor Landscape (key results of the theme study Asset managers facing the energy transition & more) | Freek van Til, VBDO
The necessary investments in the energy transition are still far from sufficient. Research by VBDO shows that many asset managers see a major challenge in the complexity of the energy transition. In order to take the right steps, Freek discusses, among other things, the various initiatives that can help asset managers with this and provides an overview of the EU legislation that plays an important role in accelerating the energy transition. The importance of good ESG integration and attention to (negative) impact is essential in realizing a just and responsible energy transition. Initiatives such as VBDO’s investor initiative on responsible nickel supply chains help to ensure fair and responsible mining practices. Standards such as IRMA are crucial in this respect, not only for companies but also for investors.
  • 3:30 pm | BlackRock Transition Scenario | Charlotte Månsson, BlackRock
The transition to a low-carbon economy is a major structural shift that we see rewiring economies, sectors and businesses. This mega force is unfolding in decades to come – and is already playing out in markets today. Their effects create complexity, risk and opportunity for companies and investors. The BlackRock Investment Institute Transition Scenario (BIITS) is our framework for tracking the transition to a low-carbon economy – one of several mega forces sweeping markets – to help assess the investment opportunities and risks it may bring.
  • 4:00 pm | Short break
  • 4:10 pm | The True Cost of EV Growth: How Nickel and Mineral Extraction Fuel Deforestation | Jasmine Puteri, Rainforest Foundation Norway
As the global demand for EVs grows, so does the pressure on tropical forests, leading to deforestation, ecosystem destruction, and significant impacts on Indigenous communities whose lands are often targeted for mining. The session will explore the real-world consequences of these activities, highlighting how mining concessions are driving deforestation and land conflicts. Investors will learn how tools like geospatial mapping can help them assess and mitigate these risks. Through active engagement with companies, investors can influence more responsible resource extraction, aligning their portfolios with long-term sustainability while safeguarding forest ecosystems and Indigenous rights.
  • 4:30 pm | Energy transition in mobility: a multi-path and integrated approach | Wilbert Muilenburg & Erwin Jongh, Sales Manager Energy | Louwman
Wilbert will explain the support that Louwman Energy provides to SMEs and the challenges they experience when transforming from a fuel-powered to a fully battery-electric fleet.
  • 5:00 pm | Closure, visit Louwman museum (ground level) & drinks
