Mining is a sector that is notorious for its large, negative impact on people and the environment. Although we see a shift from linear to circular use of materials and minerals, many raw materials are still needed for the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Steps are being taken in the Philippines: the round table on responsible mining in the Philippines turned out to be very open and constructive, the financial sector came to the table for the first time. Although the sector faces many different challenges in many areas, we found agreement in the effort to raise responsible mining to a higher level for national and, especially, small-scale miners who represent more than 500,000 workers.
